Still Image Analysis Of Exsisting Films

Still Image analysis

The shinning – This image shows the genre clearly. The audience can automatically tell that this is a screen shot from a thriller film due to several different aspects (the mise-en-scene). The shot used is a close-up meaning that the audience can clearly see the characters facial expressions due to the fact that he is in focus of the camera. We can see that he is sweating – this suggest that the character has been running and that the film is, at some points, very fast paced and builds up tension. The fact that he is attempting to get through a smashed up door implies that he is chasing someone: this is too an association with a thriller movie. The make-up shows deep dark bags under the characters eyes, suggesting that he is tired. His hair is messed up and part of it is shown to be wet and on his face: showing how he has been doing something that involves becoming sweaty. His eyes are squinted and he is clearly shown to be staring at something/someone. The audience are left questioning whom he is looking at and why he cannot simply open the door (why is he smashing his way through it?). His mouth is wide open and it looks to be as if the character is out of breath and perhaps grunting. His nostrils are flared out, again, implying that he is heavily breathing. The character looks frustrated and angry. This image makes the audience feel uncomfortable and curious as to why the character is so angry and determined to get through the door in such a hurry.

You’ve got mail – This mid-shot shows the two characters interacting in a conversation as the two are directly facing each other and are looking into each other’s eyes. All though someone would associate pointing a knife at someone as an aspect of a thriller/horror movie; the audience can clearly tell that this is not the case. The female actress is not holding the knife in threatening way: but, instead she has clearly been using the knife previously prior to engaging in the current conversation. The male is also holding a plate of food which suggests that perhaps food was being prepared before this moment. The fact that the use of the knife is being mocked within this still image suggests that the genre of this film is a comedy and the two interacting characters also suggest that the overall genre is in fact a rom-com. The setting appears to be the living room of a house and therefore it makes the scene feel homely: especially because it is suggested that the female is preparing food. The characters are both wearing black – implying that the two are as one.
