Our Film Time Line

This is a time line of our opening sequence. I decided to create a time line as it would allow me to compare our opening with an existing media product.

Evaluation Question Seven

Evaluation Question Six

Camera

The camera we used was owned by group member Ellie. The reasons as to why we chose to use our own camera instead of the basic filming equipment provided by the school was due to the feature of High Definition Filming that Ellie's camera had. We decided to use this as from previous planning we knew that we was going to be filming a lot of our opening in outdoor public scenes. This also meant that we had to do weather checks prior to filming in order to ensure that the particular day chosen would be suitable for filming. The HD feature allowed for us to film in a professional asthetic way even if the weather was raning. When filming at the train station on our 3rd session of filming it was infact raining and therefore, the HD aspect of this camera helped us to aviod grain and bad quality filming. We also had a scene where by we was filming in the morning. In order to emphasise this effect we shut the curtains and dimmed the lighting to create a low key effect. The HD feature allowed for no grain to be shown in the scene also - creating for a professional finsihed look.

This is a prezi to finalize my knowledge about what I have learnt from this process about technologies.

Evaluation Question Five

After we had completed the frist initial construction of our video, I interviewed one of my peers in order to recieve any feedback that could allow for my group to edit and improve our future final piece.

Evaluation Question Four

Feedback and Key Findings

Evaluation Question Three

More information about the companies

Evaluation Question Two

The opening sequence Dear John shows Savannah to be presented in a polite and elegant way. This is how our character Libbie would also be.

Evaluation Question One

Form - The main form and purpose of a films opening sequence is to set the scene and atmosphere of the upcoming events for the audience. The opening sequence should reveal some things, yet hide others: creating mystery for the audience yet allowing them to gain knowledge and understanding, to some extent, of what the film is going to be about. The opening should keep the viewers intrested and intise them into wanting to watch more. The titles should be displayed in this section of the film in order to give the workers of the film recognition for their work - titles also remain professional.

Introduction Of Characters - Characters are conventionaly introduced within the opening sequence in order to set the scene and allow for the audience to gain some knowledge of what the film is about. However, some films go against this convention in order to create mystery and an atmosphere of suspense. In our film, the two protagonist characters are introduced and the audience take an innate liking towards the two. The first shot that shows the female character presents her in a mysterious form. Her back is facing the opposite way of the camera and there is no eye contact between the character and the auidience. There is no dialouge within our opening sequence, therefore our opening holds something back as the audience are not able to make a connection with the characters through the sound of their voices. However, we do use a voice over allowing for the audience to understand the events more. The voice over is what reveals the circumstances that are happening at that time.

Not giving everything away - Our opening holds back and gives the audience enigmas that will make them want to continue on in watching the rest of the upcoming film. The characters walk by one another at the end of the opening and the audience want to know where they are going. The auidence also want to know how the two characters know each other and why the character who is talking in the voice over is speaking about loss and missing someone.

Initial Pitch and Presentation

Final Voice Over Script

Voice Over

This is the voice over that we have written for the male character within our film. We want our opening sequence to be quite heart clenching and we want the voice over in particular to draw the audience in. After writing down many idea's about what this character could say which would be the most effective, we all came to an agreement that these idea's fitted best in relation to the action that takes place when they are watching the films opening. In the first few shots, we will be showing various angle's in our female character's room getting a text and then getting ready; doing her hair, makeup, jewellery etc. Whilst this is being shown we will have the voice over begin so that you can hear the male character in the background at most times, speaking about the love of his life and a loss of something (Evie). We want the audience to be taking note of what the male character is saying in the background as he's voice speaks over the soft music which, as it picks up, starts to come to an end and then picks up as the music becomes quieter again. When we did practise shot's and filming, we found that when we put the action together with the voice over, too much was going on so we are thinking removed some of the voice over so that the audience can focus on the action for a while rather what the character is saying. The action taking place will be able to be followed on from what the male character has been saying so the audience will be able to interpret for themselves what is going on.

We felt that the voice over will give the opening sequence the romantic mood and sad emotion that we want to potray within our opening and i also feel that it makes ti easier for the audience to interpret what is going on if there is a voice over to listen to as well as the action taking place. With too much of the voice over on whilst the action is being shown, the audience will get confused as they wont know what part of the opening to focus on which is why we are only using some parts of the script, not all of it.

Planning Photo's

These are photo's from the planning stages of the consturction of our film. The first photograph shows Libbie researching for relateable images that reflected our thoughts and ideas for our film - these thoughts and ideas were going to be placed on to our mood board. She used search engines such as Google and Yahoo in order to find a variety of images and icons that would portray our ideas in a convienient and interesting way. We also hoped that this research would give us new ideas and inspiration. The second photo located on the top right of the page portrays another member of the group, Daniella, creating the mood board itself. Daniella volunteered herself to draw the mood board as she has an artistic side to her personality and enjoys drawing. The final image shows myself, Sydney, taking note of everything that we, as a group and as individuals, were doing and also what we planned to next lesson in order to make progress and she improvement within our overall work.

Feedback, Improvements And Final Ideas Film Shot List
After speaking to our teacher and friends and recieving further feedback on what we thought was going to be our final piece, we decided that there were some things that we could improve on that we didnt quite notice ourselves.
The feedback we recieved was that:
1. The narrative was not clear for the audience.
2. You couldnt interpret where the story line was going to go and enigma was lost half way through.
3. The voice over contradicted the mood being portrayed on screen in our action. (Voice over was sad, action being shown wasnt)
4. The female character was forgotten about after the few shots of her were shown at the beginning of the opening sequence.
5. The camera was shaky and didnt look professional in some places.
6. The first few shots were to grainy as the resolution wasnt high enough when we were filming.
7. The credits were not kept consistant as at the beginning they were being shown on mobile phones, only 2 are shown in this way and the rest are on black and white screens.
8. The most significant part within our opening wasnt filmed effectively and could look better once re done.

From this feedback we decided that the narrative being the object that draws the audience in, needed to be established better as its not being portrayed clearly. Our peers and teachers said they found themselves getting lost within the first 30 seconds of the opening as the camera was only following the male character although the voice over being used was speaking about the different qualities of the female character. We feel that with Kate(Evie) being a significant/main character within our story line and opening, she needed more screen time as, as the sequence went on, you began to forget about her very quickly and withought her being on screen, you dont focus on the voice over much. The reason why we think we didnt notice all of these points is because when filming, we filmed so many different shots that we had orignially planned and some of them didnt look as effective as we thought they were going to so we decided to change a few of them.

And The Rest Is History - Story Board Timeline

  • This is our initial idea for our story board. It clearly presents the idea's that we first thought about such as the home video's.
  • As the story board begins we can see that there is a shot showing a credit saying 'SLED productions presents'. This is one of the shots that we will be showing at the beginning of our film so this is one of the aspects that will remain the same whithin the next story board that we do for our final piece.
  • SLED productions stands for SYDNEY LIBBIE ELLIE DANIELLA. We feel that this is quite effective but we are not yet sure on weather to use this as this was going to be our production name. We have now thought of other ideas to use for this aspect of our film opening.
  • The next shot is another credit showing 'In association with County High Media' another shot that we will be using in our final story board.
  • For the rest of the story board, a lot of the idea's that we had about shots such as the artistic shot's we are no longer including as we felt that too much was going on within the first scene when we did practice shots.
  • When we included the voice over on top of the background music and all the different shots that were going on, it began to look more like a short film rather than an opening sequence; It looked more like we was trying to show shots that were significant throughout the rest of the film which is the opposite to what we were trying to achieve which was to create an opening which left the audience in enigma wondering where the two people in our opening sequence were going to go.
  • The shot that we see after the first set of credits in our story board, suggests that we were going to show blurred shots of people walking around a train station, buying tickets etc but we felt that if we did this too early on then the audience would know where the characters were heading and enigma wouldn't be able to be fulfilled effectively.
  • There is multiple aspects of this story board that we will be using in our final idea such as some of the animations.
  • We feel that through the animations we have created for our story board we can make an effective opening by drawing the audience in more using conventional film opening iconic animations portraying characters emotions and helping set the atmosphere of the opening.
  • The shot that show's sam's character crossing the road will be a similar shot to something we will use within our final piece as we feel that this is very effective that fact that he will have his hood up as he crosses the road. This will give the impression that he is in deep thought and isn't thinking about his health and safety when crossing the road although we will take full precaution when filming this shot.
  • Shots after this will be our action shots showing 'home video's. Something that we will not be using in our final opening sequence filming.
  • We decided against this as we felt that this was an aspect that could show that it looked more like a short film or a trailer rather than a film opening. (When we done our practice filming, it was established clearly that this wasnt going to work).
  • From 0:56 in the story board to 1:38, shots are shown in the story board that we will not be using as they are all related to home video's and the idea that the past tense is being shown.
  • From 2/3rds of the story board onwards, we will be using a lot of the idea's that we got from this story board to complete our final one.
  • When filming, we are hoping to portray the idea that time is passing as the two characters are getting ready.
  • We are going to do this through the use of props such as clocks and the idea that time is passing as the sunrise's which is shown within this story board.
  • At the end of this story board, the point in which the music begins to pick up and the audience can see that the two characters are pace walking towards one another, enigma is created which is why we feel that this will be a very effective shot to film and use.
  • At the end, where the two character's walk passed each other in the train station, the title will be shown much like it is on this story board but we will be writing it either on a black screen as a title on its own or we will give the impression that it has been embedded on the brick work of the wall that they are passing on.
  • We feel that this will be very effective in our final filming as it creates a lot of emotion and makes the audience build up enigma and tension as they begin to think that the two people/animations that have been advancing towards one another, are going to join together.
  • The rest of the film's story line will remain a mystery as not too much will be given away within the opening sequence. This will leave the audience wanting to watch more and full of suspense as we want them to feel soprry for the male character as he speaks so nicely about (what the audience think of as) his girlfriend and yet when they pass eachother they walk completely opposite ways like they dont even know eachother.

  • And The Rest Is History - Final Piece

This is our final media product. overall I am very happy with the outcome of our film and I feel that it is professional and gives off connotations of everything that I and my group set out to do. However, I do feel that there were several improvements that could have been made - I will mention these in evaluation question number seven.

    Film Preperation

When we arrived at our setting, Ellie's bedroom, we made sure that we paid attention to detail by replacing all of Ellie's photo's with photo's of Kate, our main character. We did this in order to ensure that everything would be correct and realistic. If we did not do this, then the audience may notice a picture of Ellie and then they would resultantly have the enigma of 'Who is she?' The pictures on the right appear in the opening sequence as a close-up, meaning that the detail would be very obvious to the audience - this is why we felt it important to make changes to these particular images as the setting is structured to be Kate'sbedroom within the film.

    Breif Shot List

    Costume Research

In the opening of our film, Kate whom is playing the leading role of our main character Evie, is seen in bed. Due to this aspect, she needs to be costumed in pjs and comfortable clothes. I have done research as to what looks natural but still professional for costume, hair and makeup. Here shows two young women in big, baggy and lose clothing - this conveys comfort and makes the audience want to be in bed themsleves. The fact that the shirts are so lose makes it appear as if the shirts could potentially be a boy of love intrest. This would be a good feature to add to our opening as our genre is romance - this would allow our costume to link in with our genre and narrative as Kate has a boyfriend within the lot of the film. Both the models hair are down and ina natural form: this appears more realistic than having completely straight hair as it would look as if it has been styled in a specific way, rather than spontaneously. All of the colours used above are autum/winter related - this too reflects upon the season in which our film opening is set in. Both the models have their skin showing; whether it be the legs, the sleeves rolled up in order to show the arms, or the buttons done loosely in order to show the collar bones. This gives sex appeal and would target the male auidence well and would make them want to watch it. Both model's make-up is very natural and the pair looks naturally beautiful. I will use this informaiton to help myself and others in my group come up with the overall look for a female character's first costume.

    Characters Costumes

    Characters Costumes

These are the costumes that we have used to portray our characters.

This is Katie's, playing the role of Evie, first costume. Her look is very relateable to the audience of teenage girls and is too very appealing to the viewers of teenage boys due to the length of the shorts that she is seen wearing in the picture. The shorts consist of the pattern of a cow, showing a vunerable side of the character as it portrays how young she is within the film. The length and fitting of the shorts flaunt her figure and make her appear asthethetically pleasing to the audience. Girls would apire to have the same figure and boys would find her attractive. The black hoody is lose on Kate and appears to be too big. This could make the audience assume that the jumper is in fact a boys, showing how Kate has some form of love interest - this is what the upcoming events in the opening sequence will too link in with and portray through the use of camera work and the narrative. The colour of the hoody is black representing how something bad could be about to happen. Overall Kate's costume 1 look is very homely and comes across to the audience as realistic and natural - this makes Kate's character as relateable as possible to the audience. She is wearing fluffy scocks. This is an extra added touch that our group decided to go with as we all discovered that we all wear fluffy socks to bed in the winter. The texture of the socks convey a time in season to the audience and give them a sense of stability as it answer some of the engimas that they would automatically recieve when watching the opening sequence to a film. Kate's hair, at this point, was in a messy bun and she was styled to have no make up on in order for her to look natural and appear as if she has just woken up from a nights sleep - this is also why she is styled in pj's. The two tassels on her jumper are uneven in length: This makes it appear more realistic as although we have thought about the details of her costume very hard, it looks as if we haven't and that this was by accident.

Kate's next costume shows her ready to leave the house and go out. She is seen wearing casual clothing and wearing a coat due to the weather conditions of the early winter. Alike to most females, she is carrying a handbag with her that would contain belongings such as a purse, makeup, a hair brush, money, travel cards and possibly an umbrella. Due to her coat being a plain colour as well as her plain jeans, we decided to give a brightly coloured red bag in order to show some fun and happy personality traits. It makes the outfit look more appealing and positive. The coat conists of lepard print fur on the color: the lepard print portrays fashion and style, and the fur portrays the winter and her need to keep warm. Kate is wearing a necklace to show detail within her outfit and like she has made an effort to look at her best. The necklace is also girly. Overall Kate's outfit is very girly and relateable to teenage girls of this time as she fits in with the latest fashion trends. If a girl was to see Kate wearing this outfit they would see her as fashionable and popular due to the statement she is making with the bright bag and aniaml patterns. The outfit is matching and colour coordinated.

Sam's outfit portrays his characters personality well. His look is chic and he would be seen has an outgoing person in the way he makes his fashions statements. He looks smart and the audience can clearly see that he has made an effort. This would also make the audience think that Sam is going out somewhere that he feels is important and where he needs to look formal. His overall look contrasts with Kate's in the way that she is smart/casul and Sam is pure smart. This could give the impression that the two are going to different destinations. The colours within Sam's outfit are very dull and give off negative connotations. It implies that he is not feeling to good and that perhaps he is depressed. All of his buttons are done up correctly and he appears to be well dressed. He is posing with his hands in each pocket, showing how he is a laidback person and feels relxaed within himself and the enviroment that he is situated in. He is wearing a tie: this adds detail to his outfit and shows how he has made an effort - impying to the audience that he has a priority for his appearnce. Both Kate and Sam are wearing at least one item of black clothing: this gives off negative and depressed connataions. His trousers are tightly fitted, linking in with his chic look.

    Prop Ideas

Ideas of Props we can use for our opening sequence

In the opening of our film we want to use various props such as train tickets, phone text messages, newspapers, train bulletins, posters and close up's of clouds etc. Within the opening we need to be able to portray different emotions and establish the overall atmosphere at the same time. By the use of train tickets as props, we want a close up of the ticket's information so that although it is shown as a ticket, it has space for credits on the front which we can replace the information with.

By using this it gives the audience an insight into things that are going to come up such as when kate makes her way to paris. This scene wont be shown to the audience as we will only be showing the opening two-three minutes and we dont want to give to much away but this is something that our opening sequence will advance into. Being a romantic theme, we want close up's of props such as phones so that we can clearly show text messages which we also feel will be a good idea to put credits on. We are thinking about using an iphone and sending a text to it with 'directed by' ( for example ). Newspapers, magazines, billboards posters etc are all quite stereo typical of a romance to have to the titles or credits on but we feel that using these as props purposely set up for the credits will be perfect for the mood of the scene's that we are going to try and establish through the use of the props. It is common to see people on and off of trains reading and holding newspapers, magazines and books etc so this would make the film opening seem more realistic yet creative at the same time. We were thinking about changing the title of the newspaper that someone is stood at the train station reading for example. We feel that as a member of the audience watching other peoples openings and films that already exist, the audience most commonly try and read the front of magazines or newspapers that a character in the film are reading so we feel this will be ideal. Another idea we thought about for props was things like keyrings and small items which may have no significance to the rest of the film but help establish the atmosphere and theme's and we can use creatively to show the credits.

Natural Props such as clouds could be used as they pass by as the blue sky and the bright white clouds will help contrast the mood of the opening sequence leading up to the happy home video's so the bright sky can resembly happiness. We will also be able to use things such as clouds and the sky to put our credits on. As the film opening progresses, there will be several different scenes such as in the home videos, ( bedroom, kitchen etc) so we can use different parts of each room or different props i the rooms such as mobile phones to show the credits.

Much like the music will we want the props to help build up the atmosphere and mood of the setting so each prop will show something different such as happiness, sadness etc. As the music picks up and then slows down at different times we can use the relevant props. For example, when the music is quite slow at the beginning we can use the phone, train tickets etc which actually have some kind of significance within the rest of the film's story line. Props such as the front of newspapers, magazines etc can all be used as the music begins to pick up a bit as the audience will be foccusing more on what is actually happening within the film rather than the titles being shown. The credits we will be using at this point will be the less important ones such as the makeup team etc. When the film opening begins to draw to an end we will have to introduce the director as our last credit so this one will have to be the most obvious one in the whole opening so we can place this credit on a plain page of its own withought any props.

    Title Trial and logo idead

Potential Logos For Our Film Opening

    Idea 1: Sled Productions

We felt as a group SLED productions would be a good name for the production company because it was an idea that had all of us involved as each of our first initials was used. The aspects we didnt like about this logo was the idea that it had nothing to do with romance and may look slightly inappropriate being used at the beginning of a romance genre film if the production company that created it was called SLED. We also felt that there wasn't much we could do with the sled to animate it apart from the obvious so this wasnt very effective when trying various animation techniques out. Furthermore, we didn't feel that this was a very catchy name such as some of the other ideas that we had thought about so we decided against using this idea as the audience wouldnt be able to interpret for themselves that the word SLED stood for the initials of the group members.

    Idea 2: Dove Productions
As a group we felt that the idea of the dove opening up it's wings would look effective in the opening of our film as a dove most commonly reprisents love and peace which is two large semantic fields we want to try and portray within our opening. Although Dove production's relates well to the idea of romance, we had a lot of difficulty in the way that we was going to add any type of animation or sound effects to make the dove seem life like or anything like a logo in a normal film opening. When trying out various techniques we discovered that this was a lot harder than we intially thought it would be and because it is only something extra to add effect to the opening, it wasnt vital and so we didnt want to try to produce something that was going to extremelly time consuming which may stop us from doing other things of more importance such as the editing etc. In conclusion, the main reason why we decided against using this icon as our animated logo was because it was too time consuming and took a lot of skills to be able to make the logo look effective in relation to our genre.

    Idea 3: Heartbreak Productions

Heartbreak productions was an idea that sprung into all of our minds when we started to draft ideas about logo's we could use. Considering the genre of our film is romance and our film idea's are based on the break up and part of a boy and his girlfriend, we wanted to try and portray these idea's through the use of the production logo either through an iconic animation or a significant title. We felt that through the use of a love heart this was done effectively and the heart could be animated quite easily through the use of an open love heart and then a fade transition into it breaking in half with the words coming out the middle of the hearts crack. Although, a down side would be that 'Heartbreak Productions' sounds to typical and boring in relation to what people would expect. We wanted something which was a bit more artistic yet not too complicated that we could use to portray the emotions that are about to be shown in the opening.

    Idea 4: Blooming Productions

The idea of Blooming Productions was one that we all agreed would be really effective and worthwhile making. The 'Blooming' word came from the idea of the flowers, being the iconic animation we would use, opening up as the words appeared on the screen. This logo could suggest many things about the film opening being not only that it was a romance but that some kind of love story was either about to blossom in to something or was going to suprise the audience with something completely new as it 'opened up'. This is the exact intended effect that we wanted to achieve through our logo and we felt that the use of flowers usually reprisents guilt or passion if it is coming from a male, to a female. This can also be reprisentable within our opening as it portrays the story line to be about a possible guilt story. The begginning of our opening sequence begins with very slow music so we are hoping to use a logo that will be able to fit in with this kind of mood and tone as the flowers open slowly in time with the music being played on the background. Further more, by having flower's which arent too detailed such as roses for example, we can easily edit them into an animation on a fixed black screen which will be very effective as the colours will contrast well. The only downfall would be that it wasnt as appealing to all audience members such as boys for example. The other idea's such as the dove arent as gender specific and so they can be aimed at anyone although we don't feel that this is something that is of great concern as only a very small minority of boys would want to watch a romance anyway.

    Our Characters

    SAM RINGROSE

Sam is the character we will be using for our film. We feel that as a character, the boy in our film needs to be attractive, nice smart yet casual appearance and someone who the girls want to watch and the boys inspire to be like. In a typical romance genre film, the boy character is usually quite tall, good looking, charming and the type of boy that some boys, at the end of the story, look at as a role model. Sam is tall, slim and has a very charming look about him. With his stylish quiff, good sense of fashion and tattoo's which make him seem like quite a querky character,we feel that he will be perfect in relation to what we are looking for in our film. Sam has an enthusiastic character and being such a close family friend of one of the group members, he will be willing to take an critism's and try to perfect them whilst we are shooting. Throughout the film opening we will need quite a deep, sorrowfull voice for a voice over. The character will be speaking about his ex girlfriend both nostalgically and grievingly. Although sam's voice is deep, we dont feel that its deep enough for the intended mood that we are going to try to portray within the first couple of moments in the opening film. The boys voice we are going to use for this will be Rhys Van De Zande. His voice will automatically establish the inital atmosphere. The audience will never hear Sams real voice so they will prosume that the voice over is what this character sounds like. The costume we will give sam will be quite smart in the parts where you see him as a character. He will be dressed in a suit or smart clothing such as smart trousers, shirt and tie. This will suggest to the audience that he is going to work and that is why he is at the train station or it could create enigma and make them begin to question why he is dressed like this and where he is going. His hair will be in the kind of quiff that is shown in the pictures below as we feel that this makes him look quite trendy and quirky as a character at the same time.

    KATIE WEAVER

Katie is the actor we will be using as the girl in our film opening. She is a bubbly outgoing character as a person in real life but in the film opening she will be portrayed as being quite shy and a timid character. The only time when you see Katie is going to be in the home video's which will show the boy and the girl when they were in a relationship, all being video's on a hand held camera. By doing this it will give a more realistic feel to the film opening and we think that by using Katie, she will be ideal. Katie is again, a close family friend of one of the group members so we have decided that she will be best out of some of the other people that we were to use a possibility. The character in our film opening needs to be relateable to teenagers of this day and age and normal girls. This way, the audience will be able to relate to the film and so they are more likely to continue to watch the rest of the film. The girl in our romantic film has got to be pretty to girls and attractive to boys so that the film, although aimed at teenage girls, can appeal to both genders. We feel that considering katie has such long hair, we will be able to style it in many ways which in the home video's will be ideal as we can make it look like its a completely different day just by changing the way her hair and clothing looked. For instance, we could make her hair look quite scruffy in one shot which would suggest that she had just got out of bed or that it was early morning. This helps set the films narrative and gives audience an insight into whats going to happen or what should be expected in the film. In the shot that we film the two characters walking past eachother in the train station we could change katies hair completely allowing the audience to think that time has passed or that she is heading to a specific destination. The clothes we want Katie to wear in the film will be a variety of materials, lengths etc. When we are showing the home video's we want her to be wearing clothing such as baggy jumpers, short shorts etc which will suggest the comfort and confidence she feels within the relationship. It will also make her look more laid back, happy and homely. Her hair will be in soft bouncy curls and this will also suggest that she feels comfertable enough to walk around with her natural hair and not much makeup. Once again, a more natural look will make the scenes seem more realistic and people may be able to relate more to the characters. When we see Katies character in the train station and she walks straight passed Sam, our opposing malecharacter, she will have a completely different hair style such as a slick back pony tail or bun. This could highlight the idea of her also going to work so it would make it look like her and the male character were just two normal people on their way to work. Kate is also a media student meaning that she has a good knowledge basis for what we are doing and what we are attempting to achieve.

    DVD cover

This is what our DVD cover for our film would look like. This idea is based upon previous DVD cover research. We was influenced by many other DVD covers that we had previouslly analysed within other research. We felt it important to create our own cover in order for us to have a better understanding of the films itself and the target audience.

    Mood Board

This is the planning image for the mood board. We felt it nessecary to craft a mood board in order to make sure that we can conclude enough influence from a variety of items and events as possible. . We knew that a lot of hard work that was going to go into the moard board as it was a way of expressing all the different emotions and ideas that link in with our film opening & film so we decided on making a plan first so that we could rub different idea's out and take things away that we didnt feel matched out genre as much. Being a romance we felt that the love heart could portray our themes and feelings of what we are going to try and get across within the opening.

This is our final piece for our mood board. Its bright, colourfull and portrays all different emotions which are linked in with our film such as happiness, sadness and sorrow etc. On one side of our final pieces love heart we have happy pictures such as a happy smiley face, two people smiling and love hearts made out of clouds which gives quite a happy feel. On the other side we have more sad pictures such as sad quotes, a black rose reprisenting death and loss of love/life. Being two sides of the loveheart, the mood board can relate to the way that our film opening will portray different emotions. The arty hand drawn pictures, small printed pictures representing happiness etc and the main colour being pink, we feel it shows everything it needs to as a 'mood' board and establishes the themes of love, loss and romance well.

Research On Potential Ideas For Actors/Actresses (Looks and Personality)

The characters within our film would be protagonists and the audience would auotmatically feel warmth for them and take a liking to them due to their good personas and personalities. The characters within a romance genre film are conventionally good-hearted and warm natured. These aspects will reflect in our film in order to remain conventional. Romance represents fantasy and we feel that exceptionally good looks and charm will provide the themes and aspects of fantasy for the audience and their imaginations. Jack, the starring male character in the romantic film Titanic, is a common young American male whom has luckily won himself a ticket on the titanic ship. His personality is relistic and he relates to a lot of people whom fit into the categoric target audience. He is astheticallly young looking and almost posses of some what a 'baby' feature face. His hair is always styled to be natural in the film, with his fringe flicked/wavey - it has been styled to look unstyled as his character is not a perfectionist nor a vein character. The audience can immediately tell that Jack is a protagonist. He is also conventionally handsome, but in a natural way which makes the audience take a liking to him. Rose is the starring female actress in the film Titanic. Although her family is very wealthy and come across to the audience as vein and self-absorbed, Rose has personality traits that allow the audience to know that she is also, alike to Jack, a protagonist. The audience can then make connections and automatically want the two protagonists to get together. Rose is conventionally pretty and we can see that she has the wealth to wear make-up, expensive jewllery and clothes, and have her hair looking in a perfectly styled way. She is the opposite to jack when it come to looks and how they go about the asthetics, however their personalities reflect and compliment eachother. Rose's mother's personality of vein, sinister and evil allow for the audience to feel sympathetic towards Rose and this makes the audience like her even more. We as a group feel that our characters personalities should be inspired by characters like Rose and Jack as they both portray charm, happiness, hope and joy - these all give positive effects to the audience and give them likeable featuers. The two characters are both coventioanlly handsome/beautiful and this is something that we will try to look for when selecting our characters.

    Location Ideas

Possible places to film our opening

When filming the opening of our film, we need various places at various times. For example, when the home video's are being shown we will need a bedroom that looks quite mature and not to teen typical. When we spoke about this we considered the most convinient places first and then if they didnt work we looking into places that would need more changing etc. We thought about my room and realised that the colour scheme, green and pink, wouldnt match the mood and tone and could ruin the setting. Also i have a very girly bedroom with items such as pink flower arrangements etc scattered around my room, some non removable so this wouldnt be very convinient. Also i have a single bed which also isn't what we are looking for in our opening. The two characters at one point will be in bed on a sideways shot which will show one of our main characters faces so its quite an important shot. A bedroom we decided we could use was Ellie Wallace's, one of the girls within our group. Her room is brght and lets in loads of sunshine. We need this kind of lighting and bedroom when filming this part of our opening because at this point we are referring back to when they were happy together in bed etc. The lightin will also be able to be used to portray the mood and atmosphere at this point making it easuy for the audience to establish what is going on. Another room we considered was Sydney's room, a girl in our group, but we found the same kind of problems for sydney's room and also, it hasnt been finished decorating yet so this wouldn't look very proffesional.

Another setting we will need will be the train station that we film two of the characters on. Within this scene we need to film two peoples feet walking along. The lighting will need to be quite bright in this station and we want the floor and walls in the background etc to be fairly presentable. By using a nice train station in london for example, not only can we achieve our shot where the two characters have to go into a large crowd but we can also film a long shot of them walking past one another. If we was to use a station such as brentwood station, we wouldn't be able to achieve the emotion and mood that we need to when the two eope eventually walk past eachother and there is a lot of tension. Brentwood station is very small and hasn't got very big platforms to walk along so we wont be able to get the most effective shot from a high angle.

The house that we film the old home video's in also needs to be appropriate with the right props etc and places to place our props. We want to make it look like the two characters we are using are living in a house of their own so as the character advances around the house filming the other character, she has to be doing certain things such as when she is painting a picture and he films up behind her. The rooms need to be quite spacious so that the characters can be established easily and stand out. When we are filming the home video's we will be getting the boy character to hand held the camera so that it looks more realistic. As he walks around the house he needs a clear run so that he can walk at a good pace withought having to watch what is around him and this way, he can keep focused on the camera giving us the chance of getting the best shot possible. Items such as the flower pot in the picture below on the stairs will be a health hazard for when the boy character is walking down the stairs. If he is focusing on the camera and how it is moving down the stairs, he might not notice the stuff on the stairs and trip. Things like this need to be taken into account so a lot of clear space will be needed.

    Sound Track Research

    SOUNDTRACK RESEARCH

The genre of our film is going to be Romance. Because of the genre we have chosen we needed to be very carefull about what music we used to be able to create the full effect of the opening sequence. We researched many different songs and finally came to a conclusion of which we felt was the best one for the actions and narrative/voiceover that will be used in our opening sequence. Here are some of the songs that we researched and our feedback from peers and group members about why we felt it did or did not fit our film opening or genre.

    CARELESS WHISPER,GEORGE MICHAEL

Although this song is a very romantic love song which is one aspect of what we are looking for, we found it to cringy for the story life that we were trying to portray. Also, our film opening will consist of a boys voice over speaking about loss and his girlfriend so jazz music wouldnt be approriate as you wouldnt be able to hear the boys voice properly because of the instruments used, unless you made it very loud. Other students in our class feel that this song wouldnt sound right if we are using a voice over because too much would be going on. Our teacher didnt like this song because she felt that it was too stero typical of our genre to have a song like this and its something the audience will expect.

ça me trouble by Alain Nobile

This song sounds more depressing than romantic. As a group we felt it would be too busy (too many instruments playing at once) for the voice over to sound effective. Although words could be put over the top, much like George Michaels song Careless Whisper, it would have to be very quiet for the voice over to be heard effectively by the audience. Our peers feel that with the voice over and action we have chosen to take place we need a song that drops and picks up at the right times. This song seems to stay at a constant pace and beat/tone the whole way through only varying rarely. This is not what we are looking for as we need a song that can fit perfectly with our action etc.

    Our Storm by Flo2 Productions

This song we felt could be a possability as one in which we could use in our opening sequence. It starts off with a nice tone and pitch, perfect for a voice over but we feel it may need to be slowed down as the character wont be speaking very fast in our voice over. Much like the other songs we chose but didnt like as much, the beat doesnt drop at the appropriate times and the beat and song itself stays the same throughout. On one and this could be good because we dont want too many instruments or different pitches etc but on the other hand we dont want the sog to be too boring or it will not be effective. Our class peers feel that with this song its a bit too up beat for the story line we are thinking about the opening sequence leading on to. The boy will be talking about loss and love for his girlfriend and we all feel that this song is a bit too modern and up beat for that. When the action starts and we see our characters walking towards eachother for exmaple, we want the song to change so that the audience can interpret that something may happen. There isn't any way we would be able to adjust this song to fit our needs

To Claire; From Sonny - Let There Be Light (THE CHOSEN ONE)

This is the song we have decided on using in our opening sequence. The way that the song starts is perfect as it has pauses and not over crouded sounds of instruments like some of the other songs we researched, only piano. At 0:31, the music drops slightly and as the song becomes more intense we will introduce our home video flashbacks, and aspect we are hoping to use in our opening sequence. From that point on until the next part of the music drops, there are small pauses inbetween where a drum can be heard. Being so equally spaced out we thought that this would be perfect for each home video to be shown so that it is all in sync making it more effective and emotional. A violin starts to be introduced as the song progresses making the song more emotional and effectively romantic. At 1:03 the song builds up a bit and it changes again, at this point we will be changing to a low mid tracking shot of our two characters, both girl and boy are walking. The shot will be showing their footsteps walking towards the ccentre of the screen and the camera will be rising up to a torso shot and then a full head shot as it zooms out. The audience will think, as the footsteps are in complete sync with the music which is building up, that the two characters are walking towards one another. At the point of roughly 1:24, the music changes again and slows down in pace as the audience notice that the two characters have infact walked completely past eachother like they dont even know eachother. This will make the audience try to interpret for themselves what is going on and what relations these two characters being shown actually have to one another. From this point onwards the music starts to fade and so the opening sequence begins to draw to an end. The character will start narrating again and when the music stops the character will continue to speak as he says in sync with the title of the film ''And the rest if history..''. As a group we felt that this song would be perfect for our genre and the emotions we are trying to portray and connect with the audience. After we told the class and our teacher what our plans were for the action and speak overs such as timings, etc, both the teacher and peers agree that this is the best song and our reasons are strong and valid. Everyone agree's that this will be the most effective song as it gives off the most emotion and will fit perfectly with what we want to do in our opening sequence.
