The first shot shows a censored image of a water birth. The use of high key lighting shows how a baby is being newly brought into the world. The shot would be a point of view shot. The dialogue would be screaming and people mumbling - this creates a sense of chaos and makes the audience question what is happening as the fact that the birth is censored makes it unclear to the audience what exactly is going on. The shot would not be focused on a specific item and would be blurry and distorted: This makes everything bazaar and also makes the audience feel tension.
The second shot would represent the chaos of the birth and the hospital itself. The facial expressions of the doctors and nurses would be concerned and the audience would be wondering why this is occurring within the scene. The soundtrack of mad world would start to play, however the actual lyric of the song would not start to sound until later on in the scene. This is due to the woman screaming and other characters talking, it would be too chaotic. The piano soundtrack alone is much more emotional at this point in time of the scene. The shot itself used would be a mid-shot to establish some of the background, but to mainly focus upon the facial expressions of the characters seen in focus. The lighting here would be naturalistic as it has the realism factor and is too representative of our genre due to it being low-budget.
The third shot shows the mother to be dead. This image is to the point and quite brutal for the audience. It creates the sad atmosphere that is to be presented throughout the entire upcoming of the film. The shot would be a mid shot (allowing some view age of background yet mainly focussing upon the facial expressions of the characters). We would have the contrast of this image to be black and white to perhaps represent how this event would make the news and to also convey how it is in the past of the upcoming events in the film.
The next shot would be a close-up of a crying eye. This signifies clearly to the audience that something upsetting has happened. The audience can clearly understand the emotions that are going on within the scene. Due to the shot used being a close-up, it means that the audience can only focus upon the eye and that there are no distractions. This also means that the emotion of sorrow and sadness would be the main feeling that the audience feel at this point of the scene. The lighting here would be naturalistic, as well as the characters make-up, in order for the realism factor to remain: It also portrays our genre well.
The next shot would be a birds-eye-view shot of the new born baby. Already the audience are made to feel sympathetic towards the baby due to the previous shots and sound tracking. Mad world would be continuing the play, however at the sight of this shot there would be no other dialogue from any other characters and the lyrics of the song would start to play. The lyrics of the song itself are very important as it gives the audience an emotion of no hope and negativity.
The final shot of our opening sequence would be of the boy when he has grown up into a small boy sitting in his wheelchair all alone. The atmosphere continues to be sorrow and sadness. The music would stop and everything would be silent. The lighting would be dull, dark and of low key to signify to the audience how the boy is feeling: alone. The long shot would show a long empty corridor and would convey the fact that the boy is alone.
